The Shape of the Moment is a book in progress, in four seasonal volumes. It brings together two practices I kept separate for fifteen years: photography and morning writing. Each spread pairs a photograph with a handwritten journal entry from the same day.
The book began as something else. For years I shaped my photographs into a daybook, one image for each day of the year, paired with short passages by other writers. Then a treasured colleague asked, "I know you've been writing every morning for years. What in your writing might pair with these images?" I read my journals for the first time and found a second record of the same days. Once I started choosing passages with a photograph in mind, the two practices began to intertwine in ways I found uncanny. Text and image deepen, illuminate, complicate, or contrast with each other, and it's up to the reader to work out how.
Spring is nearly complete, and Winter is underway. Watch the video below to hear a few pages read aloud, or scroll down to see more spreads.
